Kris Karlsen's Blog (30)

There was a little girl ...

The most difficult hair in the world, to brush. Well ... it wasn't quite an Afro, but you know what I'm saying.

I don't know how she managed braids. I had nothing to do with that one. Only time I've ever seen it like that.

Wish I ...

You ever meet someone you wish you would have known when you were a child? Just a little more time to share? I'm not sure when this photo was taken, but I'm guessing somewhere around 1980, or just before.

It's difficult to walk around with so much indignation towards the world around me, yet have so much love for another human being, in my…

Shaykha Pea

I called her "Pea," as I say. Still do. This is one of the first pictures she ever sent me, just following a round of chemo. I told her she looked like a Turkish Sufi mureed, and we began to discuss that. She knew some Arabic, from college, but I'd actually been an active member of a more or less traditional Sufi tariqa, with a lineage based out of Istanbul.…

The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

One of Kristin's all-time favorite films. It was one of the first things we ever discussed. She was terrified that something like what happened to Anna Mae Aquash was going to happen to her yet, at the same time, lived with all the fervor of a martyr saint and was quite vocal about it.

Very passionate about her…

"Crazy Horse dreamed and went into the world where there is nothing but the spirits of all things. That is the real world that is behind this one, and everything we see here is something like a shadow from that one." - Nicholas Black Elk…

Oo La La La

Not sure when this was taken, but she appears to be studying Latin, by the looks of the original.

Movie Music Kills A Kiss.

Another of K's favorite bands. I'd never heard of them before we met. She had great taste in independent rock music. She knew of a few world artists I'd never heard of before, as well. Loved country. Taught me to embrace it again. Never knew anyone like her, in my entire life.…

"Pea"

I called her "Pea". It was actually her name for me, at first; "Sugar Snap Pea". She was completely bald, at the time, due to her chemo treatments, and I just started calling her "Pea" because it seemed to fit.

Her hair color is a bit deceiving, in photos. It was black. Jet black and…

These Boots.

I used to polish these boots. Kind of regularly, when I was there, in fact. Just because I loved her. Kind of like Jesus' disciples washing one another's feet, I suppose. Simple act of selfless love.

Kristin did not snag her jeans on a dock cleat. It's a bald-faced lie, coming straight from the mouth of the San Juan County Sheriff's…

Flatlands

I actually have a bunch of kin, in Missouri. When I was 17, I ran away from home. I had it in my mind that I was going to be a bluesman. Destination: New Orleans, Louisiana. I made it as far as Granite City, MO, where my Great Aunt and Uncle took me in ... and promptly called the police.

This is the photo from our Reverb Nation site. One of the first she ever gave to me. It's altered from the original; I like to do photo art, and she was always pleased whenever I'd send one back with…

My Huckleberry Friend.

Kristin loved school. Deeply engaged with it, in fact. Everything from writing to acting and cheering on the football team.

I didn't like school at all. I was, however, ahead of my class in English, and sang bass in choir. And ... she was the sort of girl I would have probably fallen flat on my face in love with, as a schoolboy. (We were both very devoted to church, as well. I liked nice girls.)…

Onion Creek

Can't remember the last time I was in a major city. I originally found this gig for Kristin. It's about as "Northern Exposure" as you can really get, here in Washington, these days. She had the DVD collection. Neither of us liked to watch TV, but we made an exception for that one.

This was a little too far from where she felt she needed to…

Never Say Goodbye.

Little secret about Kristin: She adored Bon Jovi, as a young teenager.

I was more of a ZZ Top guy, at that age. But, we both agreed, all evidence gathered and interpreted, that John's band pretty much creamed that whole hair metal thing. I hear he's actually a great guy, too.

Except for maybe Twisted Sister, that is.…
