MC Sha-Rock is a historic element of history, often referred to as the “Luminary Icon” or the” Mother of the Mic”. As the Hip Hop Cultures first influential female emcee; she has built a foundation for other female emcees world-wide. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina her parents decided to move the family to New York, City.
In the early 1970s a musical genre was born in the tough neighborhoods of the South Bronx. Talented teenagers with plenty of creativity and imagination began to develop a new street style; referred to as Hip-Hop. It provided a combination of rhythms and melodies from existing records, mixing them up with poetry chronicling life in the 'hood. Established as a b-girl/break dancer, MC Sha-Rock later elevated to become the Hip Hop Cultures first female emcee” as part of the legendary rap group called The Funky 4.
In 1984, MC Sha-Rock and members of the group made a guest appearance on “Saturday Night Live” hosted by Deborah Harry from the legendary rock group “Blondie” making them the first Hip Hop group to appear on national television. For over a decade she has contributed to the Hip Hop movement, her work includes several documentaries for the BBC film organization to include,” Thirty Years of Hip Hop”, which aired on VH1 and “My Mic Sounds Nice” which aired on the B.E.T. network. AlfaAnderson's life changed when Luther Vandross invited her to a vocal session for Chic. At the time, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards had just formed the group with Tony Thompson on drums and Norma Jean Wright on lead vocals. She sang background on Chic's first two singles for Atlantic Records, "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" and “Everybody Dance," which both brought Chic to the top of the dance charts for seven consecutive weeks in 1977. After joining Chic on tour, Alfa was promoted to lead vocalist, a role she and Luci Martin shared from 1978-1983.
The group's second album, C'est CHIC (1978), was a critical and commercial tour de force. It featured Anderson's two solo numbers, "At Last I Am Free" and the gold-selling single "I Want Your Love." Alfa and renowned session vocalist Diva Gray both sang lead on "Le Freak," Rodgers and Edwards' ode to Studio 54. The song not only became Chic's most successful single but, for more than 30 years, was the biggest-selling single in Atlantic's history. "Le Freak” topped the Hot 100 for three weeks and went to number one on both the R&B and disco singles charts, quickly earning gold and platinum certifications. C'est CHIC was later named "1979 R&B Album of the Year" by Billboard after it topped the R&B chart for eleven weeks.

A testament to her dynamic presence on screen we will see her play the iconic warrior Queen Hatshepsut in the first all-black cast Hollywood blockbuster set for release in 2019, ‘Protector Of The Gods’ the Egyptian trilogy charting the empires’ most powerful female Pharaohs. Alongside a golden list of executive producers including Rhonda Ross and Prince Jackson.
Shingai’s highly anticipated release as an independent artist, ‘Ancient Futures’ will be released Spring/Summer 2019. The first single ‘Coming Home’ was inspired by Thomas Mapfumo’s classic hit ‘Shumba’ and represents the journey of Zimbabwean music, whose legacy she is taking into the future. Fans will be taken on a cinematic journey with a music video written, co-directed and conceptualised by Shingai. Shot on location in Zimbabwe it will showcase the rarely depicted vibrancy of Zim’s capital (Harare), Domboshawa, creatives and people. With the behind the scenes of the video captured on film as part of the BBC’2 series ‘Africa with Ade Adepitan’, in the last of the four episodes.
A local hero to Deptford Shingai is also an ambassador for Second Wave Youth Arts and the Midi Music Company, where you can find her immortalised on a celebratory mural on their wall on Watson Street.
