Much More Than Shifting Tassles.

Decked out in robes 
of the colors we cherished
for several years
wearing Mortar boards 
that contain no mortar
to hold us all together
tassles now turned to the front
all pomp is done
and the circumstances are
that we've graduated with
rigor mortis grins on our faces
backslapping and high fives
confidence exuded
in youthful pride
the whole world awaits us
we "will" change it all
but as car horns fade in the distance
autos graced with fingerpainted signs
our smiles tremble a little
as we turn to leave
this building
and these teachers
who taught us how
to leave so well prepared.

the stadium sits quiet now in the sun
with the pockmarks from football seasons
buried in the June grass
Mom and Dad beckon
with hands that urge haste
"Oh, please...not so soon!"
let this moment go on
with hours of bliss
of friends ..of this
but the car door is a jar
and I am too soon bottled up inside
college looms in the dark shadows
of tommorrow..... and tommorrow has arrived
tears trickle as I realize
you can't go back
it's all a headlong rush onward as
the school dissappears 
behind some trees
along with my youth
there goes Mary and Joe
homecoming Queen
coming home at last
Mary's eyes are misty too
a tiny wave of her hand
marks our passing
Mom asks, "What's wrong, dear..
why so quiet?"
and when I do not answer
she gifts me with a melancholy smile
Dad shares a sigh with her
they both have traveled 
where I am
this road is old
many footprints lead the way
many more today will follow
some will wander off to war
and then return no more
some will marry and depart
to some other state
where they'll grow old
and never cross my path again
whole classes of people
set adrift
destined to be seniors
one day again
but for now 
and for years to come
most of them will be 
deleted from my life
my new hood is adult now
my room when I get home
seems small and slightly cramped
the world has shrunk it down
and bids me flee it's refuge
tommorrow I can sleep in
and dream of all that I once had
till I awaken and I face
the loss of one life so familiar
that I'll leave behind me 
as I head out
on a stranger journey
future bound........
