First love revisited often.

Her eyes
cornflower blue
still haunt
the years cannot erase
the softness of her

lovely gaze
 when I told her
of my love that day

 Her lips so

petulant and pink

bent with a smile

that held me mesmerized

as she realized

that I might be her guy

warming my soul

with joy
and sweet surprise.

I caught her tender
hints of love

beneath her shyest depths

and when her face

drew oh, so close to mine

I could not catch my breath

And as I bent to kiss her
her eyes closed
as if she knew

my very next intention 
and  her breath caught too

But just before our lips
knew touch, as pairs
first kisses share
a sound it broke the stillness
of that sultry August air….

Her Mother calling

 out her name
she backed away
and headed home
and I was left in 
willowed shade
just 12 years old....alone

I know I can't recapture
that electric moment when
we almost kissed
and what we missed
will never come again
