The Social Experience......Helping the Unsigned Artist Get Heard!!!
Since the age of 15 I have spent my life learning music, producing music, working for major and Indi record labels, and promoting various night clubs, shows for major artist, and music related events. Over time I have gained a lot of knowledge and perspective. Here are my Top 5 Tips:
#1 Check Your Self - Don’t Wreck Yourself
The music business is a sales industry where the chief product is a song created by a singer, rapper, and music composer. This song is organized and prepared for buyers by music producers. As an artist, you must accept the fact that producers and A+R Directors are concerned primarily about the Return On Investment. If your music cannot sell; record labels will not want to invest the time or money into your music. If you are more interested in showcasing your music as ART and you are not interested in selling your music, the music industry is not for you.
#2 It Don’t Mean a Thing - If It Aint Got That Swing
Obviously you will need 2 to 3 songs that appeal to your chosen market. We typically call these songs HITS. The best indicator that you have a HIT song is sales. If you can show that you have fans who are willing to purchase your song, share your song with others, dance to your song at a club, then you may have a hit on your hand. Depending on your girlfriend/boyfriend, BFF, Manager, Mom and Dad as a good filter is always a bad idea. If someone likes your music, ask them to buy it for .99 and THEN you will know if they REALLY like your song.
#3 Web Presence Is a Must
Social Media is the newest, fastest, most innovative way that humanity has developed to communicate with each other. We can literally reach millions of people from around the globe within seconds, minutes, hours. Either you, a manager, or your GF/BF should spend time everyday developing your Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, Twitter, InstaGram accounts. Through Social Media you can increase your fan base, spread your message, market and promote your music and yourself.
#4 Show Me The Money-Maker
Having a well-produced, well-rehearsed, well organized show event will help you generate income from ticket sales, promote your music, sell your merchandise, and try new ideas with the people who know and love your current music. Record Labels want to know that you have a show that not only entertaining, but is generating income. In addition, your shows give you honest unbiased feedback from your fans about your music, merchandise, and your presentation. Your shows should help you develop as a Brand Name.
#5 It IS About Who You Know
98% of the artists you see on TV or hear on radio have been discovered by a trusted music industry professional. We have a clear understanding of the type of music and artist Record Labels are looking to sign. Once you meet someone like me ask plenty of questions, collect and catalogue the information we give you, invite me to your shows, don’t be shy or quiet, send me the links to your music, read my feedback, and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
