It's great to network locally but when you network in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles or Texas you see things in a different light. You realize that the world is soo much bigger than your state or region. You start to network and build nationally and internationally. That business card you took and added them on facebook or twitter easily leads to several other contacts. That's the great thing about this business during the social media age. That is one of the things I enjoy about attending a music conference, seminar and tastemakers today.
I know very talented musicians who spend their days gettng high and talking about how good they were. I know less talented musicians who are touring Europe and have multiple houses and cars. The same circle of friends! Why did some have success and others didn't despite their talent? Networking and learning the very basics of the business!
When a single crab is put into a lidless bucket, they surely can and will escape. However, when more than one share a bucket, none can get out. If one crab elevates themself above all, the others will grab this crab and drag'em back down to share the mutual fate of the rest of the group. Some people believe that describes the music scene!
