I want to die 

up there

on a spotlit stage,

among eager fans

while I'm still

 the rage...

On my closing

encore

as crowds

roar for more,

while I'm wailing

the blues

their souls 

hunger for...

Gazing into

thier faces

that I''ve always adored,

let them scream

and applaud

as I hit the floor.

Whispering "Farewell, "

in a breathless voice

making my final exit

cause we get no choice....

Thanking one and all

for their faithful years

at  every bar and concert hall.

bringing me cheers.

No cancer ward,

or hospice,

no blast of

twisted steel,

no nursing home

where hope is lost

in chairs that

come with wheels.

no plane

that takes

it's final dive,

I've played in dives

they're rotten.

I want to go

at the end

of a show,

that will never

be forgotten.

Elvis died curled

round a toilet,

Kurt Cobain

ate his gun,

Mama Cass choked

on a sandwich,

Jimmi Hendrix

...Heroin,

Buddy Holly in

a plane crash

after he had

just performed,

tumbled

endless times

through a

frozen field,

in a desolate

winter storm...

Otis Redding 

in a watery death

his plane

splashed down 

near my home

Sonny Bono

ran into a tree,

why he hit it

is still unknoiwn?

Janis Joplin in

a hotel room

overdosed

lay dead for days

they all should

have died

up on the stage

but the Reaper

gets his way.

They'd earned

to rights

to perish

amidst a

crowd of

fans who cherished,

all they sang

and played,

on their final day,

in a passing

proud and garish.

I want to rise up

on some heavenly wings

to backstage.....

way up in glory,

where common folks

and saints all come,

to hear the

next star's story.

A celestial stage where

the greatest sage

sits front row

upon a throne,

as I pour my heart out

with a song that's

the best I've ever known.

Then I'll kneel

when my

last note's done,

as the heavenly applaud,

returning all the talents

I'd been lent,

to  my greatest muse

...My God.

Then I'll grab a seat

in the second row,

to watch the

endless shows,

of those

who'd gone

before me,

names that you

and I all know.

The concert

of milleniums

playing on

forevermore,

Jamming with

the bands

when they

need a hand,

what more could

a man ask for.
