If you don't understand the business than how do you truly understand how much you are suppose to be PAID? I have a childhood friend who is one of the best drummers in the world and toured with just about every rock and r&b group. He also studied music management. He decided to help a few people we grew up with and they started touring with him. Well they started complaining because he was making more money than them. They didn't realize he was only charging half of what most managers charge. They are no longer touring nationally or internationally. They are barely doing local gigs. They now realize that he is doing them a huge favor but that bridge is already burned.   -Neba

In reading this today it brought to mind how many times I had performed without expecting any pay.  I was just grateful for the opportunities.  But when that came into question, man did it become uncomfortable and no longer fun to sing, especially in a group , wondering who's getting what and who isn't and why someone would do that to you, is it how I performed?  what made them decide it this way or why did I get more and others are mad at me??

Money changes everything and it becomes a pain in the bum,but if you get it straight from the start with a written agreement (Contract, even a Mini one for each gig)  you have less of a headache.  Coming out to perform for many places is hard work, long sets and the band needs to get paid or you won't always have one, so a reasonable agreed contract would seem promising a solution.

But, you never know what folks are thinking and what their reasons are for remaining in band.  I say regular financial meetings and band discussion time is important because $$ can destroy an artists career sometimes before it begins along with friendships.  How important is it to you?  Get it in writing or others will think, it's not and take advantage of you.  Think Wisely and Fairly and God Bless You, Love LADII TC!

R.I.P., SCOTT TUCHBAND (1952 - 2024)

In 1976, I, Elliott Michaels, sang and played organ in a Brooklyn band known as FIREFLY. Mr. Tuchband co-wrote most of the original songs we played in Firefly, in collaboration with his friend and neighbor Joseph Bolnick. Scott went on to play in a number of other bands and musical groups such as Kashmir,…See More
