NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY--JUNE 2

Millions of Americans are coming together to fight for a country where every person can live a life free from gun violence. If you believe there’s more we can do to save American lives from gun violence, you are Orange.

The color orange symbolizes the value of human life. Hunters wear orange to alert other hunters that they’re there — as a way to take care of their own life and the lives of others. In 2013, teens on the South Side of Chicago asked their classmates to wear orange in honor a friend who was shot and killed. Now, we’re amplifying their call to action and turning orange into a symbol for the value of human life everywhere.

MARCH FOR PEACE: COMMUNITY UNITES AGAINST STREET VIOLENCE

“SAVE OUR CITY STREETS, WE WANT CITY PEACE!”

Passionate cries against violence rang in the streets of Chicago’s Far South side this past weekend, as an anti-violence march and a peacemaking rally gathered local residents to spread the message of peace and safety.

Unite Our City Children (UOCC), a nascent grassroots organization created by community members, led the march that took place along East 106th Street last Friday as well as the peace rally in the parking lot of the United Methodist Church on Sunday. UOCC is a not-for-profit organization solely put together by the efforts of local parents and community members who saw the violence that ravaged the city streets.

The anti-violence movement followed a deadly month, during which five people got shot within a five-mile radius of the community over the 4th of July weekend.

CHEEKIE: A CHILD OUT OF THE DESIRE

The Enough Abuse Campaign is helping to crowdsource funds to turn the critically acclaimed novel Cheekie: A Child out of the Desire into a movie - and we need your help! We have partnered with the author, Clarence Nero, called "one of our most promising young authors," by his former mentor the late Dr. Maya Angelou. The Indigogo Campaign Goal is $250,000 - by investing in this project you can help create a movie that tells a story of resilience in the face of the violence, sexual abuse and poverty of the New Orleans Project named Desire. If funded, this incredible story could reach movie-goers across the nation, shedding new light upon the inspiring strength that many Survivors share and motivating audiences to end abuse within their own communities using the tools and collaborative expertise of the Enough Abuse Campaign.

 The Enough Abuse Campaign is a grassroots movement gaining momentum across the country.  Developed inMassachusetts, the Campaign has been adopted by New Jersey and Maryland and has now been launched in New York, Nevada and 25 counties in California.  We are providing adults and communities with the knowledge and skills they need to put an end to the silence.  And eventually, the epidemic.

The movement against child sexual abuse starts with a single word – ENOUGH.

Its symbol - a hand raised outward indicating our unwillingness to let the problem go unchallenged any longer.

Its hope – that by being united we can end the secrets, shame, hurt, confusion, and denial that for too long have allowed child sexual abuse to operate, and even thrive, in our homes and communities.

Its commitment – to bring together parents, professionals, adult survivors, concerned citizens, elected leaders, policymakers, and funders to engage them in this historic movement.

Stop Child Abuse Campaign

In January 2006, a 7-year-old girl named Nixzmary Brown was beaten to death in her home in Brooklyn. She weighed just 36 pounds. She had missed weeks of school in the months leading up to her death. She often had cuts and bruises, and vague explanations - another fall, another accident. Home was a horror for Nixzmary, but somehow, so many caring adults in her community missed the signs of her abuse. In response, Safe Horizon and Mariska Hargitay joined forces to launch an extensive public awareness campaign in March of 2006.

Advertisements proclaimed a compelling rallying cry: "Turn Your Outrage and Grief into Action." Readers were directed to over 300 branches of North Fork Bank, now Capital One Bank, where they could request "10 Ways to Stop Child Abuse," a resource developed by Safe Horizon's crisis intervention and child trauma experts that outlines common signs of child abuse as well as how and where to report it. 

On March 18, 2008, Nixzmary Brown's stepfather was convicted of first-degree manslaughter. Her mother will soon be tried on murder charges. With increased public awareness of the signs of abuse, we hope to decrease the need to seek justice for children and increase the joy, comfort and well-being that safety, security and caring can bring to their lives.
