About Me
In 1973 i went to practice with a band in Santa Paula, California. I rented a saxophone (I played clarinet all through elementary school) so I could do the one thing the GUYS wanted me to do play the solo on 'ANGEL BABY'. That was the beginning of my post formative years music career. The band was SABOR and I was not that good although I COULD get a sound out of the SAX.

At a subsequent practice the band was trying to learn 'Will it go round in circles'. For some reason there were always fights during or after practice. This particular day the keyboard / piano player could not learn the introduction and the conga player decided to tell him how it should be played. The tension was high there was a fight. I just wanted to help and explained that taking it note by note like I learned in school would be the best approach. The keyboard player quit or was fired that day.

It was still 1973 and I went to look for a keyboard. The members of the group that had just fired their keyboard player nominated me, not because I knew how to play piano. Clyde Heck's had a beautiful Fender Rhodes 73 key stage piano and a Music Man amp comparable to the Fender twin reverb. Two grand and I had about $400, but I had a savings that my mom and dad had helped me to put money away for 15 years. They said it was my money and so I got up the nerve to tell my dad what I wanted to do. That was not a happy day at the Castaneda residence.

The guilt I experienced after buying my Fender Rhodes haunted me for awhile. I had failed in college. My parents made sacrifices to send me to an amazing college and although my experience was amazing I did not graduate. I can go into that, but it is not edifying to anybody. Especially my parents who loved me through thick and thin. We practiced in a little room in back of a friend's house. There was barely enough room for us to sit on our amplifiers and play our instruments. The cold was not an issue because we were in there so tight that the body heat kept us warm. Three times a week four to five hours a night. We were learning covers and WAR and SANTANA seemed the like the right fare for this group. Bass guitar, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, congas, drums and a lot of love and effort. More love for the music than each other but that would come.

Someone I did not know from UCSB called and asked if we could play for a party there. What the heck ...we probably were not ready but we took the gig. We were playing in an apartment complex. In the recreation room ...we could maybe squeeze fifty people in there. I was nervous and would need an application of liquid courage before we played. When we arrived I met the promoter... a student that was friends with some of the band members. 'I hope you don't mind', he exclaimed. 'You guys didn't give me a name so I called you 'Los Homeboys'. I never really knew what to think of that. We called each other 'homeboys', but in 1974 the name wad starting to have a bad connotation. Years later we would succumb to that. But for that night it was fine, like alka seltzer we hit the scene, the crowd stirred, they danced, they screamed, maybe a few fell in love that night. For certain, what I do remember was crazy and I loved it, all of it. For sure this is what I wanted to do the rest of my life. In the morning, to my aghast, while unloading equipment from my car there were a pair of congas in my trunk. They were not mine, my passenger in his inebriation had decided to borrow them....forever. He said he didn't remember....I told him I don't care what you remember. RETURN THEM! My music career was off with a bang....or at least a thump slap slap!!!
