T Dawn's Interview With Vents Magazine
Can you please introduce and tell us more about yourself (history)?
Sure, my name is T Dawn. I am a three time award winning Alternative Rock, singer/songwriter and musician from Southern California. Several years ago before I was a singer I was an instrumentalist. After the devastating passing of my father I found myself writing about my feelings. I wrote my first song, “Mental Breakdown.” I wasn’t really sure how I was going to tackle this song because now there were lyrics involved. I thought, who should sing this? No one came to mind but me. That is where my world turned around and I discovered my voice. Since then there has been no turning back.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Well, it’s funny that you ask because my stage name has always been a conversation piece.
Dawn is actually part of my real name which really seems to suit me. There is just something about a new day that excites me, not to mention I also find it very mysterious, “the twilight before the sunrises” just listen to how that sounds. While most of us are still sleeping during the twilight a new dawn is appearing and leading the way into a new day. I just find that so fascinating. Can you tell I am a songwriter? (laughing)
So inspired by my thoughts I began to think of a stage name that I could use with the name “dawn” in it. I had no idea how hard that was going to be at the time. So I looked up “dawn”, already taken. I tried “the dawn”, already taken. How about “twilight dawn”, nope already taken. So I thought what the heck I will use T Dawn, that will tackle both names. Which once again leaves you with a mystery of the “dawn.”
Who are your musical influences?
My musical influences range anywhere from the 70’s bands all the way to the 90’s bands. I seem to be influenced by musical artists that sound different and that fall into my vocal range such as Stevie Nicks, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Janis Joplin and Linda Perry.
What’s your songwriting method?
It really depends on my mood. I could be thinking about a message I want to deliver and start writing about it or I get a beat stuck in my head that keeps haunting me and I start writing around that beat.
I do have to say the beat seems to be controlling me more these days though. I will start out with a basic scratch track and then I head in to the vocal booth, crank up the headphones and I just start singing into the microphone. I tend to start out with a few words then I create a melody by scatting. I listen to the play back and I replace scatting words with lyrics. This process seems to work for me. Sometimes I come out with a totally different song then I had originally planned and sometimes I like to leave a few scat words in a song, “Halloween Night” is one of them.
Halloween Night – Temptation Calls, can you talk to us more about the song and what’s the concept behind the video?
Well, it’s a song that comes with a double edged sword. It has all the eerie tones that you would expect to find in a Halloween song but it also has a message that is unlike a typical Halloween song. At the beginning of the song I chant about “go towards the light and stay away from the darkness.” Then later in the song I sing about “frightening freaks with their trick or treats.” I think we have all had to deal with a frightening freak at least once or twice in our life. At times I think Halloween is used to glorify those “frightening freaks” and allowing them to disguise their “mystifying deceptions.” The concept behind the video and the lyrics is to find a way to stay in the light and out of the darkness.
So can we expect a new album out soon?
Yes, indeed!
If so, how’s that coming along?
I am boiling over with excitement for this next album. It’s been in the works for a little while now. This next album is going to have more of an alternative rock vibe to it along with a few special guests.
Any official release date, title in mind?
No official date or title in mind as of yet but I will be sure you let you know!
Any plans to tour throughout Canada, North America, the world?
Not sure as of yet. I have had several offers to tour the states but so far the timing isn’t right. I am excited to get back on the stage again and become one with my fans, the “Starlight.”
What’s happening next in T Dawn’s world?
It has been a great year, with three music awards and two more nominations I think it’s time to focus on giving back to my fans which I am ever so thankful for, “starlights are my energy!
Along with working on completing the new album for the next year, I am also planning on covering a few songs of some of my favorite music influences. Hmmm, I wonder who that might be” (laughing) actually you might be surprised, I am so excited about this.
There are a few new music videos in the works and there is a big music gaming project for FaceBook right around the corner.
Where can we find out more about your music? My music can be found all over the internet but my official news site: www.tdawn.com I keep that site up to date with all the “new happens” My music can be purchased at my official site, ITunes or Nimbit: http://www.nimbitmusic.com/tdawn I am very active on Twitter as well www.twitter.com/tdawn1
