WOAHHHH! WE GO INTO SHAWN CRUTCH’S AMAZING STORY! LETS GET INTO IT!

Where are you from?

“My Hometown is Chicago.”

How did you come up with your name?

“It happened after the first time my brother B.J. heard me spit in a cypher. He pulls me aside and goes: "Your what Hip-Hop is missing. The way you use your inner strength to conquer Cerebral Palsy is inspirational and your positive attitude and energy is infectious and gives people good vibes. You're someone everybody can lean on......You're Crutch." It was crazy how it stuck after that. Other Emcees respected it in cyphers then I'd hit the afterparties and use it as a pickup line on females like: " Yo I'm Crutch....You can lean on me." LOL It always worked too hahaha.”

What interested you in pursuing music?

“I never actually had an interest. When I was first born in the delivery room I had a seizure and flatlined. It took almost 20 minutes for the doctors to resuscitate me. They ran tests and said I had severe Cerebral Palsy. They told my Mom I was gonna be mentally incognitive, unable to walk, talk, and would most likely need a feeding tube. I went through four surgeries between the ages of 2 and 3 so for most part of my early childhood I was isolated and confined to a body cast. I couldn't play outside like other kids so I started writing poems as an outlet to battle my depression. Eventually I started rapping as a result and fell in love with how it made me feel.”

How old were you when you became interested in music?

“Music has always big in my family since the day I was born. When I was little, my Granny would play Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, The Delphonics, The Temptations, and a host of other soul music artists. My mother LOVES Shadé so I there was always a chill vibe in the crib whenever she played her. Popz introduced me to Pac, Snoop, Bob Marley, and throwbacks from Public Enemy My Auntie Lisa ALWAYS had B.I.G. blasting on the rides home from school. And my Auntie Rhonda put my on to Jill Scott. I fell in love wit neo-soul after that.”

Who is your music catered to?

“My music is for any individual who has been treated differently because they don't measure up to what society sees as "normal". To any individual that was told they "can't" do something just because they physically or mentally adverse. To any individual treated unfairly due to their ethnicity, financial status, economic status, beliefs, gender classification. Anyone treated like they don't belong for whatever reason. That's who I do it for. So that they can believe in themselves regardless of what anyone says.”

What are your goals as an artist and how would you describe your music?

“To use my lyricism and creativity to put handicap rap on the map. To use my gift to make a difference in as many lives as possible. Incredibly Dope Life Music.”

What has been the highlight of your career?

“Jadakiss posting my and my homie J Stats new song "Coke Flow" on his IG story like 2 days after he won the Versuz against Dip Set. Cassidy & Morgan Westbrook posted it too. That song hit like 14k views after that. He liked and commented on my IG post about my hit single "900 Bands" which garnered 50k streams on Spotify this year. I opened for Odd Squad Family a few weeks ago. I've had the opportunity to work with Avery On The Beat,, Tone Jonez, StavZ and AndyK, and Enviyon Entertainment. Harper Hill from ABC Network's show "The Good Doctor" liked my song "Flying Pyramid" on IG. I made a huge connection with Grind Mode Cypher too this year.”

Any Industry Co-Signs or Notable names you’ve worked with?

“For Co-signs Jadakiss, StavZ and Andy K, Cassidy, Morgan Westbrooks, Raisi K and I’ve worked with J Stats, Mano, Tye Hendrix, Mic Terror (Treated Crew), OnGaud, Donato”

I heard your mention a couple of your songs earlier tell us about your latest release.

“Physical Therapy Sessions [The Mixtape] It details my life and the everyday challenges I face being handicap and conquering Cerebral Palsy.”

Valley Of That - "Rains"

I'm 24 year old musician from the DMV. I grew up singing in competitive choirs but switched to rap and pop, I've been writing and singing for 6 years, I'm starting a new project based on indie/folk blended with hip hop called Valley of That. "Rain" is about a girl I broke up with because she was hard to get along with, but I didn't really want to. Valley Of That ·…See More
