Why Non-Commercial is a Better Fit for New Artists (From Commercial VS. Non-Commercial) The financial and structural differences between commercial and non-commercial radio stations necessarily lead to major differences in the sorts of material each will seriously consider for airplay.  To put it bluntly, commercial radio stations will not realistically consider playing artists who aren’t alread...y popular and established.  There is simply too much financial risk involved. That isn’t to say that commercial stations don’t have their perks.  Because commercial stations often have larger budgets to play with, they can put more “oomph” into aggressive promotional pushes…  But then again, if you’ve reached the stage in your career where you’re appearing on commercial radio, you already have a strong promo team marketing you. At the end of the day, commercial stations just aren’t the right home for emerging artists.  Unhindered by financial pressures, driven only by matters of quality and taste, non-commercial stations are suitably open-minded about what material they’ll pick up.  Meanwhile, the program director at a commercial station has to think primarily about their financial backers — not about your music. Because commercial stations rely so heavily on advertisements, they need to leave more air-time open for those advertisements to fit into.  That takes a huge bite out of how much room is left for the music — and even then, if the music that does fit doesn’t reel listeners in, they’re not going to hear (or make purchases based on) the ads. For all of these reasons, commercial radio is next to impossible to break into, especially for artists that are just starting out. Fortunately, non-commercial radio has thousands of listeners, a diverse musical community, and a rock-solid reputation for producing quality music and fostering visionary artists.

Valley Of That - "Rains"

I'm 24 year old musician from the DMV. I grew up singing in competitive choirs but switched to rap and pop, I've been writing and singing for 6 years, I'm starting a new project based on indie/folk blended with hip hop called Valley of That. "Rain" is about a girl I broke up with because she was hard to get along with, but I didn't really want to. Valley Of That ·…See More
